Escape to Paradise: Unwind at Calm Holiday Inn Srinagar
Okay, buckle up buttercups, because we're diving headfirst into the (potentially paradise-y) waters of the Holiday Inn Srinagar. This isn't your sterile, brochure-perfect review; this is real talk. Let's see if we can truly Escape to Paradise – or just to a slightly better-than-average hotel.
First Impressions - The Accessibility Angle (and My Anxieties!)
Right off the bat, the accessibility listings are crucial. For anyone with mobility issues, or simply wants to make a booking, you're going to want to know about this. I’m particularly interested because, well, sometimes I just like not having to think about getting around. The mention of Facilities for disabled guests, Elevator, and Car park [free of charge] is a good start. Knowing they've put a bit of thought into access is reassuring. I mean, nobody wants to be trapped on the fifth floor with a pizza and a bad case of the sniffles! And hey, a Car park [on-site] also feels good. No more circling the block like a lost vulture.
Getting Around: Let's Get This Travel Party Started!
- Airport transfer: Amen to this! After a long flight, the last thing you want to do is wrestle with haggling taxi drivers. This is a godsend.
- Taxi service: Good to know if you want to explore the local area.
- Valet Parking: This screams "treat yourself" and I dig it.
On-Site Grub and Giggles (Or, Will I Starve?)
Alright, food is my love language, and a hotel's dining options are a deal-breaker.
- Restaurants, Asian cuisine in restaurant, Vegetarian restaurant, Western cuisine in restaurant, International cuisine in restaurant : The range sounds promising. I like options. I don't want to be stuck with a bland, beige buffet for three days.
- Breakfast [buffet] This is a classic. But I'm hoping for something more than just the standard sad scrambled eggs. Does it taste like despair, or does it sing?
- Breakfast in room, Breakfast takeaway service: Score! Especially if you're the kind of person who enjoys a lazy morning.
- Room service [24-hour] Absolute gold. Midnight munchies? No problem! Post-spa indulgence? You got it.
I need to see more about a pool side bar, but I can't do the hotel without it, so I'm going to make a strong assumption that the pool has it, which means a Poolside bar: Woo-hoo! Margarita time, baby.
The Relaxation Station: Will My Stress Melt Away?
This is where the Holiday Inn really needs to deliver on its "Unwind" promise.
- Swimming pool, Swimming pool [outdoor], Pool with view: This is where I'm dreaming. If this pool doesn't have a view of something stunning, I'm going to be very disappointed.
- Spa, Sauna, Steamroom, Massage, Body scrub, Body wrap, Foot bath: Yes, yes, yes! All the spa-tastic things. A massage is non-negotiable after a long day, if they got a good massage I'm sold. And a body scrub? Sign me up for some serious pampering.
- Fitness center, Gym/fitness: Okay, maybe I'll be slightly less of a sloth. But let's be real, I'm mostly there for the spa.
Cleanliness, Safety, and the COVID-19 Circus
I am, let's face it, a paranoid-ish traveler these days. The Holiday Inn's response to the pandemic is going to be key.
- Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, Room sanitization opt-out available, Rooms sanitized between stays, Safe dining setup, Sanitized kitchen and tableware items, Staff trained in safety protocol: These are all good things, essential things even. It shows they're taking things seriously. I want to feel safe, and these measures are a good start.
- Hand sanitizer: Well, duh.
- Physical distancing of at least 1 meter: Makes sense. Give my personal space, please!
Rooms: My Home Away From Possibly-Not-Home
The room details are the make-or-break for me.
- Free Wi-Fi in all rooms!: Internet, Internet access – wireless, Internet access – LAN: Essential. I need to be able to doomscroll.
- Air conditioning, Blackout curtains, Carpeting, Closet, Coffee/tea maker, Complimentary tea, Desk, Extra long bed, Free bottled water, Hair dryer, High floor, In-room safe box, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Mini bar, Mirror, Non-smoking, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Satellite/cable channels, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens: I need the whole package. Air conditioning and blackout curtains are a must, as is a comfy bed. I need a decent desk to get some work done, a safe for my valuables, and a window that opens (fresh air, people!). And those slippers? That's luxury right there. Now that makes a place cozy, so that's the one to make sure is present.
- Additional toilet, Bathrobes, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Interconnecting room(s) available, Linens, On-demand movies, Scale, Socket near the bed, Sofa, Umbrella, Visual alarm: These are nice-to-haves.
Things to Do: Beyond the Buffet and Balcony
- Facilities for disabled guests, Babysitting service, Kids facilities, Gift/souvenir shop, Meeting/banquet facilities: A nice selection of amenities to make sure that the hotel is up to par with all of it's guests.
- Car park [free of charge], Car park [on-site]: Extra bonus.
The Verdict - Is It Paradise? (Probably Not, But Maybe Pretty Good)
The Holiday Inn Srinagar has a lot of potential. It's got the accessibility covered, a decent range of dining options, and all the spa stuff I crave. The COVID-19 precautions are reassuring. The facilities for children are on point, and all the essential amenities are here.
The only thing I'd add is, who is there?
I need to meet some people, and I want to befriend the staff - are they good peoples?
It's not perfect paradise, but it’s aiming for a relaxing oasis.

Escape to Paradise: NRMA Lake Somerset Holiday Park Awaits!
Okay, buckle up buttercup. This isn't your polished brochure itinerary. This is my potential Srinagar adventure, and trust me, it's gonna be a ride. Subject to change due to, you know, life.
The "Lost in Translation (and Beautiful)" Kashmiri Christmas Cracker Itinerary (aka Srinagar, Here I Come!)
Day 0: Pre-Flight Freakout & Airport Antics (aka Getting There is Half the Battle… Hopefully)
- Morning: Wake up in a cold sweat. Did I pack my scarf? My passport? Did I actually book the flight?! (Quick scan of the confirmation email. Breathe. Still alive.)
- Afternoon: Attempt to look effortlessly chic at the airport. (Fail. More "frantically rummaging through my backpack looking for lip balm"). Border security is a nightmare as usual. The person behind me sneezes, the security lady glares. Maybe I should have stayed home after all.
- Evening/Night: The flight! Praying for an empty seat next to me so I can at least try to sleep. Praying even harder that the in-flight movie isn't another rom-com. (Please, no. I’m still recovering from a heartbreak.) Land. Breathe in the thin, slightly polluted air. Srinagar, here we go! Actually, I think my baggage is a mess, I hope it arrives.
Day 1: The Calm Holiday Inn – Where’s the Calm? (Also, Houseboat Dreams and Chai Troubles)
- Morning: Roll out of bed, probably in the dark. Jet lag is a cruel mistress. Find the complimentary tea – must have chai. Discover the water pressure in the shower barely exists. (First world problems, I know, but still!).
- Afternoon: Finally manage to stumble into the Holiday Inn's restaurant. Breakfast. Scramble eggs? Nope. A weird version of scrambled eggs. Ugh. Start with a nice view of Dal Lake. The lake itself is beautiful. Maybe I should not judge too soon.
- Afternoon: Getting to my first real adventure. The Houseboat. I found this really beautiful houseboat for an authentic experience, the owner is very friendly but his English needs some work (so does my Hindi). We set sail on to Dal Lake, and it is a mess, but beautiful.
- Evening: Houseboat Rendezvous! Right, so I'm supposed to be soaking in the serenity of a traditional Kashmiri houseboat. The reality? A slightly grumpy boatman. The carpet is stained. The "romantic dinner" is, well, interesting. The chai is either too sweet or too weak. But the stars? Glorious. The silence? Almost deafening. I would stay forever if it wasn't so damp.
Day 2: Shikara Shenanigans, Shalimar Gardens & the Art of Haggling (Or, How To Avoid Being Ripped Off)
- Morning: Morning exercise on a Shikara ride. The lake is still beautiful. Trying to look graceful while navigating the rickety boat. I could fall and be eaten by fishes if I am not careful.
- Afternoon: Shalimar Garden. A little history. It's beautiful, even without the crowds of tourists. I'm definitely going to take a selfie. Haggling for souvenirs! A scarf, a pashmina… the verbal sparring with the shopkeepers is almost as fun as the shopping itself. The goal? To survive and not be completely scammed. (Fingers crossed.)
- Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant. Spicy food with no water. Try to be brave. Order local dishes. Regret the decision almost immediately. (But still, eat it. Gotta experience the culture!)
Day 3: The Market Mayhem and The Chai Quest
- Morning: Visiting the markets!! Oh my god, the colours, the smells, the people. Trying to find a tea in this maze of shops. Getting lost. Getting slightly panicked. But, its fun!!
- Afternoon: Find the perfect cup of kahwa. It'll include some weird spices, and who knows what else but the point is, I have found the perfect cup of tea.
- Evening: The market again. I need a scarf. Maybe more tea. Maybe a new travel buddy? Or not, as I still miss my ex.
Day 4: Gulmarg Day Trip (Skiing? Or Just Falling Down a Lot?)
- Morning: Wake up, still recovering from the kahwa haze.
- Afternoon: I don't know the name of the places, but there are a lot of shops selling stuff.
- Evening: Dinner at Holiday Inn again, I am too tired to eat anywhere else. Also, it's safe to eat here.
Day 5: The Farewell Fear & The "I'll Be Back" Promise
- Morning: Pack. Sigh. Reflect on the sheer beauty/chaos of Srinagar. Am I ready to leave? No. Am I ready to go home? Maybe.
- Afternoon: Last-minute souvenir shopping. Buy something ridiculous. (Probably another scarf. Or 10.)
- Evening/Night: The flight home. This time, I manage to get an empty seat next to me!
The Undeniable Truths of This Itinerary:
- This is not a perfect trip. There will be missed buses, wrong turns, and questionable food choices.
- I will probably cry at least once (probably because of the spices, but also possibly because of the beauty).
- I will learn, I will grow, and I will undoubtedly come back.
- Kashmir, for all its messiness and beauty, is a place that stays with you.
So yeah, that's the plan. Wish me luck… and bring extra tissues. (For the tears, the runny nose, and the general chaos of life.)
